This year, LeavePlus proudly celebrates 50 years of supporting the workers, employers and industry that help build Victoria.

For half a century, Victoria’s portable long service leave scheme has recognised a simple idea: service to an industry should count.

Construction workers play a vital role in building the homes we live in, the roads we travel on and the infrastructure that keeps our communities connected. For 50 years, the scheme has helped recognise those contributions by protecting the long service leave benefits workers earn throughout their careers.

Today, we celebrate not only a significant milestone, but the hundreds of thousands of workers, employers, industry representatives, Board members and employees who have been part of this journey.

Built on a simple idea

When the scheme was established in 1976, construction workers often moved between employers as projects began and finished. As a result, many missed out on long service leave despite years of service to the industry.

The scheme changed that by recognising service to the industry, not just service to a single employer.

Fifty years later, that principle remains at the heart of everything we do.

Today, LeavePlus continues to protect worker entitlements, support employers and strengthen participation in the scheme. We’re also investing in our people, services and technology to ensure the scheme remains accessible, sustainable and ready for the future.

This milestone belongs to everyone who has contributed to the scheme’s success over the past 50 years.

To the workers who have built their careers in the industry. To the employers who have supported the scheme. To the industry representatives, Board members and employees who have helped it grow and evolve.
