50 YEARS STANDING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO BUILD VICTORIA

This year, LeavePlus turns 50. That’s five decades administering the portable long service leave scheme for the construction industry in Victoria, growing and protecting the fund, and making sure you get the leave you deserve.

Over the past 50 years, we have…

Welcomed over 850K workers to the scheme

Registered over 85K employers

Approved more than 350K claims

So, as we mark this milestone in our East Melbourne office where we have been for over 40 years, we want to say thank you.

You’re the people who built the Victoria we love, and who continue to shape the state in remarkable ways.

Here’s to another 50 years standing behind you.

“The people who build this state deserve a break. They always have. For fifty years, making sure they get it has been our purpose and our privilege.”

Craig Bell, CEO LeavePlus

LEGAL APPEAL DECISION IMPACTS

LEGAL APPEAL DECISION IMPACTS

In 2026 we celebrate 50 years since the scheme was first introduced in 1976. Let’s take a look back at the history of long service leave in Victoria.

UNIQUE ORIGINS: Long service leave started in Australia in the 1860s as a way for British workers to take a long boat trip back home to visit family. The standard thirteen weeks of leave gave them enough time to sail to England, stay for a few weeks, and travel back

REST AND REWARD: Over time, this turned into a reward for loyalty and a way to get a good rest after years of hard work. However, this rule left out construction workers. Because building relies on short-term project contracts, workers constantly switched bosses and could never stay with one employer long enough to get the leave.

A PORTABLE SCHEME: To fix this, Victoria introduced portable long service leave for construction in 1976. This system tracks your time across the entire building industry, ensuring your hard work follows you from job to job.

+ JUDGMENT SUPPORTS LEAVEPLUS

The scheme was originally installed and managed by the Victorian government in 1976 as the ‘Building Industry Long Service Leave Board’. In the 1990s the scheme was privatised, later changing its name to ‘CoINVEST’. In 2023 we then rebranded as LeavePlus to better represent our core purpose as Victoria’s portable long service leave scheme for the construction industry.

+ EXPANDING SCHEME COVERAGE

Originally set up for the building industry, the scheme later adopted additional trades, expanding coverage to electrical trades and metal trades.

In the 1990s states and territories also adopted national reciprocal agreements, allowing construction workers to continue building upon their service if they moved interstate.

+ TECHNOLOGY IN A CHANGING WORLD

Starting with paper forms and filing cabinets, moving through the digital dawn of the internet, and now into the age of artificial intelligence – the way we work has changed a lot in 50 years. But our mission remains the same – to provide Victoria’s construction industry workers with a well-earned break when they need it most.

Workplace Wellness

It's vital to take care of your physical and mental wellbeing. But it's even more important during the darker winter months. Here are our top preventive wellbeing tips to keep your mood warm and bright, even if the weather is the opposite:

Hydrate for performance

On a busy construction site, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water—but staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to look after your wellbeing.

Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches and reduced focus—things that can impact both your safety and performance on the job. Even mild dehydration can make physically demanding work feel even tougher.

Make it a habit to drink regularly throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty. Keeping a water bottle nearby is a simple way to stay on track. Small actions like this help you stay alert, energised and ready for the day ahead.

Speak up, look out for each other

A strong worksite is one where everyone looks out for each other. If something doesn’t feel right—whether it’s a safety concern or how you’re feeling—don’t keep it to yourself.

Open conversations build trust, reduce stress and help prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems. Checking in with your mates can make a real difference, especially during busy or high-pressure periods.

You’re never on your own. A quick chat can go a long way in keeping everyone safer and more supported.

Switch off to recharge

After a full day on site, giving yourself time to properly switch off is just as important as the work itself. Constantly pushing without downtime can lead to burnout and ongoing fatigue.

Whether it’s spending time with family, getting outside, or doing something you enjoy, making space to unwind helps your body and mind recover. Quality sleep also plays a key role in staying safe and performing well at work.

Ensuring that you have sufficient recovery time will help you to come back stronger each day.
